Itchan Kala is the walled inner town of the city of Khiva, Uzbekistan. (protected by brick walls some 10 m high) . It was the last resting-place of caravans before crossing the desert to Iran. Although few very old monuments still remain, it is a coherent and well-preserved example of the Muslim architecture of Central Asia. Since 1990, it has been protected as a World Heritage Site .

The Islam-Hoja Minaret was built in 1910. At 187 feet, it is the highest minaret in Uzbekistan.

Juma Mosque, dates from the 10th Century when it was the biggest building in Khiva. The mosque was rebuilt in 1778-1782 , The unusual interior is like a column museum.

Entrance gate to the Kunya Ark khiva, the fortress and residence of Khiva’s rulers just inside the city walls. The Ark was built in the 12th Century and then expanded in the 17th Century.
