Ramses II chose the site because it was already sacred to Hathor, goddess of love ,motherhood and joy . This act strengthened his divinity in the eyes of the ancient Egyptians. it encouraged them to believe that he, too, was a god.
The twin temples were carved out of the mountainside during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II in the 13th century BC. as a lasting monument to himself and his queen Nefertari, to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Kadesh.
